A tepid start of the year for the Balearic pleasure boating
Despite all the difficulties caused by the pandemic, the Balearic nautical sector starts the year with a feeble increase, at least when it comes to registrations of pleasure craft. During January 2021, 28 vessels were registered in the Balearics, which translates to a 3,7% increase compared to the 27 registered in the same period last year, according to the data from the Directorate General of the Merchant Marine and published by the National Association of Nautical Companies (ANEN) and the Association of Nautical Companies in the Balearics (AENIB).
This small growth is in contrast with the slump experienced in the sector on the whole in Spain, with an average fall of registrations by 18,8%. These numbers gain further relevance when compared to last year´s statistics. In 2020, the total registrations on the islands fell by 10,99%, in sync with the fall of 11,1% in the whole of Spain.
Consolidating the national leadership
During the first month of 2021, the Balearic Islands accumulated 15,05% of the total registrations in Spain. This means that its weight in the national nautical market has increased compared to January 2020, when the share was 11,79% of the registrations.
Thus the Balearic Islands consolidate the position as the leading province in boat registrations in Spain, followed at a considerable distance by Cádiz (with 8,6% of the market), Barcelona ( with 8,06%), Malaga (7,53%) and Pontevedra (6,99%).
