The Balearic boat market contracts by 5% in the first half of the year
According to the recently published “Recreational Boat Market Report: January-June 2023” by ANEN, based on data provided by the Directorate General of the Merchant Navy, the number of recreational boat registrations in the Balearic Islands during the first six months of 2023 was 685. This figure indicates a decrease of 4.73% compared to the same period last year.
In contrast, the report reveals that Spain overall experienced a growth in boat registrations with a 7.3% increase, totaling 3,811 units. ANEN states that the boating sector generally has witnessed a slowdown in registrations, particularly in the segments of boats for private use measuring over eight meters.
Analyzing the boat market by provinces, the Balearic Islands continue to lead the national market, accounting for 18% of the total boat registrations in Spain. Following closely are Barcelona, with nearly 11%, and Madrid, with 6.8%.
Regarding the yacht charter market, with 1,473 charter boat registrations in Spain in the first half of the year, the market is up 12.79% over the same period last year. This segment represents approximately 40% of the overall national boat market.
Jordi Carrasco the director general of ANEN, commented on the current situation, stating, “Despite observing a decline in registrations, we are amidst the summer season, and the outlook for users is positive. Both domestic and international nautical tourists are increasingly embracing sailing as their preferred leisure activity. The rise in charter boat registrations is evidence of the growing number of people choosing to spend their holidays onboard. Moorings in ports, clubs, and marinas along our coastline are fully booked in Mediterranean areas, and other regions are also performing well.”
