The Balearic pleasure boat market slows down in the first two months of 2021

In the course of the January and February months, in the Balearics a total of 83 pleasure craft were registered, which translates to a decline of 14,14% compared to the same period in 2020, when 97 vessels were registered, according to the data from the Directorate General of Merchant Marine and published by the National Association of Nautical Companies (ANEN) in their monthly report.

To evaluate this decline it is important to bear in mind that in the first two months of 2020 the economic crisis caused by Covid had not yet started. However, it is worth stressing that the decline in the Balearics, the biggest nautical market in Spain, is steeper than the fall by 1,5% in the national average, with a total of 594 registrations compared to the 603 last year.

Anyhow, the numbers registered in the Balearics are in sharp contrast with the other provinces with important nautical markets, for example in Barcelona, where the registration increased from 50 to 52; Alicante with an increase of 51,85% from 27 to 41 vessels, and Cadiz where registration doubled from 20 to 41.

In absolute terms, Balearic Islands continue leading the table by being the province with most accumulated registrations in the whole country.

Jaume Vaquer, the President of AENIB, evaluates the situation: “It is a hesitating start of the year, but now is the time to make corrections. We must develop our creativity and disposition and make an effort to keep our position as market leaders on the national level, as this will translate to more jobs and growth on our islands. We don´t have time to waste – now is the time to active all the possible mechanisms of promotion in order to straighten the course”.
